Vitamin A and D supplementation

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest Because of a perfect storm of vitamin production problems, supplemental vitamins A and E are becoming scarce and prices are skyrocketing. Supplies probably will remain very tight well into summer of 2018. In this time of high vitamin prices and limited supply, vitamin supplementation strategies should be evaluated. The most recent dairy NRC (2001) has a vitamin A requirement of 50 IU of supplemental vitamin A/lb of body weight. For an average Jersey and Holstein cow, that translates to about 50,000 and 70,000 IU/day, respectively. That requirement is also for dry cows and growing heifers. For supplemental vitamin E, NRC recommendations are 0.35 IU/lb of body weight for lactating cows and 0.7 IU/lb of body weight for dry cows. This is approximately equal to 500 and 1000 IU/day of supplemental vitamin for lactating and dry Holstein cows and 350 and 700 IU/day for lactating and dry Jersey cows, respectively. Surveys have indicated that supplementation rates are commonly at least twice NRC recommendations.Several controlled studies have shown that feeding vitamins A and E at NRC recommendations reduce mastitis, abortions, retained placenta, and metritis compared to feeding diets with no supplemental vitamin A or E. However, essentially no data are available showing that feeding more vitamins A and E than recommended has any additional positive effects. An exception is prefresh cows because for vitamins A and E, parturition is a critical time. Substantial amounts of those vitamins are put into colostrum and substantial amounts of those vitamins are metabolized during the process of parturition. Several studies have shown that increased supplementation of vitamin E during the last two or three weeks prepartum reduces mastitis. Supplementation rates ranged from 2000 to 4000 IU/day during the prefresh period. Similar data for vitamin A are not available.Recommended vitamin supplementation strategies:1. Feed vitamins A and E at NRC levels. In many situations, this will reduce vitamin supplementation by about 50%.2. If prices continue to climb and vitamins become scarce, then:Prefresh cows should be the highest priority and be maintained at NRC levels for vitamin A and probably 2000 IU/day for vitamin E. A prefresh period of 2 or 3 weeks is adequate with respect to these vitamin recommendations. If you do not have a separate prefresh group from the far-off dry cows, the next priority would be to meet NRC requirements for vitamins A and E for all dry cows.I would try to provide some supplemental vitamins A and E to all cows, but lactating cows would be the lowest priority. These cows consume a lot of feed and the feed is usually better quality than that fed to dry cows. Lactation diets can contain substantial basal vitamin E and B-carotene (precursor to vitamin A); therefore, they will be consuming more vitamins than dry cows. If vitamin A becomes very scarce, I think you can reduce vitamin A supplementation to about 50% of NRC for several months (all the past overfeeding of vitamin A has likely increased liver stores of retinol, which can be used to meet the vitamin A needs for an extended period of time). Likewise, vitamin E supplementation to lactating cows could probably be cut to 50% of NRC in the short term (a few months).Vitamin E supplementation of bred heifers can likely be reduced to well below NRC until about 60 days prepartum. Also, some vitamin A supplementation should be provided to these animals (perhaps 50% of NRC).last_img read more

TweetDeck: The 5 Best and 3 Worst Things About The New Version That Will Launch Today

first_imgTweetDeck is the most popular desktop Twitter client and is racing Seesmic to see who can be the most innovative social media browser across multiple social networks. TweetDeck will release the latest version of its software Wednesday and the differences are dramatic. Deep integration with Facebook, MySpace integration, easier link and photo sharing are just a few of the new features.I’ve been testing the new TweetDeck for about half a day and below are the five things I like the best about it and the three things I like the least. marshall kirkpatrick Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting Related Posts 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Market Tags:#news#Product Reviews#web The Good NewsBring Your MySpace Friendships Back From the Dead, Without Visiting MySpaceMany people don’t like visiting MySpace anymore, but let’s admit it: unless you’re a total snob, you probably still have some friends that are still active there. It’s nice to know how they’re doing. The new TweetDeck makes that easy. Just grant TweetDeck permission to access your list of friends and their updates will appear in one or more columns. It’s downright heartwarming. The Facebook Integration is Very Good If you like to use Facebook, TweetDeck isn’t going to replace the user experience for you, but it’s an excellent supplemental view of your friends’ activity streams. You get the whole hog – photos, comments, likes, liking and commenting. You can even send posts to Facebook just by clicking to select or deselect that account in the update composing window. The new TweetDeck makes it easy to post messages and photos to multiple or different accounts. It’s remarkably easy – it’s fantastic. Also very nice is the ability to create TweetDeck groups from your Facebook friends. You can even create multiple columns in TweetDeck displaying updates from different groups of your Facebook friends, and group creation is now super smooth in Tweetdeck with name autocompletion when you start typing. Groups are the secret weapon of the social web and they are the key to Tweetdeck’s value. Unfortunately you can’t import the groups you’ve already created in Facebook, but more on that later. Links Shortened AutomaticallyType or paste a link into the posting box on TweetDeck and it’s now automatically shortened. It’s fast and easy, a real time saver.Drag and Drop Photos Works Well, Even With SkitchDrag photos in to share them by URL, even out of the Mac screen capture service Skitch. Expect a lot more image sharing via TweetDeck. You can even post those images over to Facebook. You can’t send images to MySpace, which is a bummer. The Directory Has PotentialThere’s a new TweetDeck Directory that’s linked-to from the client where you can find groups of users organized by topic and follow them in a new column with just a click. That’s very cool. There are really diverse groups, but they aren’t that deep in the accounts included. Using a service like Twellow or Tweepz is still a better way to create your own groups – but this isn’t bad for new users and it certainly has potential. (We’re holding our breath for the ultimate Twitter group app, another one that’s currently awaiting approval from Twitter but that we hope to get to write about soon.)The Bad NewsIt’s not all kisses from kittens with this new TweetDeck. Here are three things that are a disappointment above and beyond the fact that this is still the most memory-intensive software I have running on my computer right now.Facebook Groups Can’t Be ImportedIt’s probably not TweetDeck’s fault at all but those groups you created in Facebook? You’re going to have to build them all over again here if you want to use them. There’s nothing like creating separate views for people you knew in highschool on one hand and geeks you know from the internet on the other. The inability to port those groups over makes Facebook reading in TweetDeck a lot more clumsy than it ought to be. Dear Facebook, would you please make sure this is easy to do?MySpace May Take Up Two ColumnsSyncing a MySpace account requires that you put either activity stream or status updates in a column. If you want to see what your friends are both doing and saying, then you have to give up two columns. That’s obnoxious, but again probably not TweetDeck’s fault. I’m just saying: this is a social network activity stream browser now and there are some issues. There’s Still No Group ExportTweetDeck remains in control over the work you’ve created in building groups in its client. This is TweetDeck’s fault. The company hasn’t made any visible progress in data portability. When thousands of friend connections are flying all around, group creation adds huge value. By not facilitating the porting of those groups to and from other clients, TweetDeck (as well as Seesmic) are effectively locking their users in. It’s bad. Those issues aside, this is a major update for the better. The pace of innovation in TweetDeck is really impressive. I look forward to using this software all day, every day, for the next few months until yet another version comes out that’s even better. How does it look to you? Hopefully within the next few hours you’ll be able to give the new TweetDeck a try and let us know. World’s Biggest Blogging Platform Adds Curation Feature

first_imgWhy Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… Tags:#Blogging#news#web marshall kirkpatrick Related Posts 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Marketcenter_img A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting WordPress, the biggest blog software platform on the Web, has added a “reblogging” curation feature much like the smaller innovative service Tumblr has offered for years. It’s another chapter in the race to decrease friction in sharing your favorite Web content with friends. If the previous era of innovation on the Web was fundamentally characterized by the democratization of publishing and content creation, the next era may be based on finding solutions for building value on top of all that newly published data. Much of that value capture will be performed by machines, but tools for humans could be a game changer as well. As we wrote yesterday, Google VP Marissa Mayer says the average person uploaded 15 times more data in 2009 than they did just three years ago. Much of the innovation built on top of that explosion of data will be driven by machines, but not all of it. The gap between the value that’s made possible by all this data, and the power of the tools available to consumers to capture it, is so great that it simply must be filled. Each progressively simpler, faster and more powerful tool for everyday people to build and share collections of content is part of the race to capture that market. The addition of easy curation, if primarily in-network for now, to the giant WordPress community is a big advance for the popularization of curation. Can Curation Catch On?Will curation truly become a substantial market, capable of sustaining itself? Previous developments in the democratization of publishing have had mixed results. Blogging, photo sharing and video distribution have taken off. Mapping and podcasting, arguably, haven’t caught on as widely or sustainably.Maybe the old 1/10/90 rule will pay off when it comes to curation. One percent of people create content, 10% share it and 90% primarily consume it. If you believe those numbers, maybe the curation market has 10 times as much opportunity as the previous market for publishing tools. What do you think? Do you agree with this assessment of the opportunities in content curation? If you disagree, please say something and stop me before I say all of this again next time a curation feature is launched somewhere big.last_img read more
