There are cars with Pandora-enabled stereo systems, Netflix-streaming smartphones and Yahoo-connected tablets. With each new device we add more and more burden to the infrastructure that handles delivering all of this content, but Verizon CEO Ivan Seidenberg assured the crowd at the Consumer Electronics Show this morning that Verizon is working to handle that burden.“We are more than capable of handling the huge growth in video traffic that we anticipate seeing in the years ahead,” Seidenberg said during his opening keynote, explaining that Verizon’s recently launched 4G LTE network could satiate our hunger for mobile data. Ten years ago, said Seidenberg, only 1 in 3 people had a cell phone. Today, 9 in 10 do and wireless data conusumption has more than doubled every year. This generation of increasingly-connected individuals, he explained, “imagine access to everything at their fingertips and they want it now. They see everything as being connected – their homes, their cars, their streets.” While we all entered the keynote hall this morning hoping against hope to hear about the much awaited Verizon iPhone, we instead heard some bragging from Verizon about its ability to handle mobile data.
