INDIANAPOLIS, IN – FEBRUARY 28: Running back Elijah Holyfield of Georgia speaks to the media during day one of interviews at the NFL Combine at Lucas Oil Stadium on February 28, 2019 in Indianapolis, Indiana. (Photo by Joe Robbins/Getty Images)The NFL Combine is often thought of as an event meant to allow athletes to showcase their value ahead of the draft. Unfortunately – it works in reverse too. Some players very much hurt themselves with poor performances.Former Georgia star running back Elijah Holyfield had a tough Friday. Holyfield, who was considered one of the best tailbacks in the class heading into the event, posted slow 40-yard-dash times and dropped a key pass during a drill with the quarterbacks.Holyfield’s times were 4.79 seconds and 4.81 seconds – good for second-worst among his peers. Some are now wondering if he’s even going to be drafted at all.Ian Kenyon of Bleacher Report suggested that Holyfield is now likely a “late day three” player or an undrafted free agent. That’s a pretty steep drop after just one day of poor results. Here’s footage of Holyfield’s 40 run – and his dropped pass. It was a tough afternoon.Elijah Holyfield 40 yard dash#NFLCombine pic.twitter.com/bLQP6GKjIO— The GOAT House (@GoatHouseNFL) March 1, 2019This might not be Elijah Holyfield’s day pic.twitter.com/U8fuXJvksb— Sam Monson (@PFF_Sam) March 1, 2019Disaster strikes Elijah Holyfield with the 4.79.— RosterWatch (@RosterWatch) March 1, 2019Kenyon also thinks Nick Brosette and Devin Singletary hurt themselves as well.Unless they’re injured, these guys should now be considered very late day 3/UDFAs…– Devin Singletary (5’7, 203, 8.5′ hands, 4.66, 4.69)– Elijah Holyfield (5’11, 217, 9″ hands, 4.79, 4.81)– Nick Brosette (5’11, 209, 8 .5 hands, 4.72, 4.75)— Ian Kenyon (@IanKenyonNFL) March 1, 2019Of course, it’s also possible that a team likes what it sees on film and takes a shot on Holyfield anyway. The NFL Draft is very unpredictable.Either way, Holyfield likely now has all the motivation he needs moving forward. Wherever he lands, he’ll be eager to prove people wrong.
