The reigning European Champs were put through their paces in the finals series before securing both the Men’s and Women’s Open titles against Wales. The English Women’s Open team with 2007 World Cup Women’s Open MVP – Melanie Carsons, at the helm as player/coach, built their campaign on rock-solid defence as they swept a clean path through the opposition in the rounds. The English Men’s Open team also finished the rounds ranked number one in defence, and thus set the scene for the ‘Lions’ to hold their mantle as king of the hill in the European Touch community. England would not have it all their own way however, and in the Mixed Open division, it was 2011 World Cup hosts, Scotland, that rose to the top with a high scoring 12 – 9 victory over the reigning champs, preventing another clean-sweep. England were too good for Scotland in the Men’s 30’s division (6 – 3), whilst Wales prevailed over the Scots 6 – 4 in the Men’s 35’s, and Ireland outclassed France 9 – 3 in the Men’s 40’s category. After dominating all before them in the rounds, Sydney Rebels and the NZ Academy fought out a gritty encounter. NZ Academy just edged out Sydney Rebels 4 – 3 in the Mixed Open – Rest of the World Final in which Wagga Wagga’s Luke McKenzie was appointed as a referee to the final. “All you have to do – is start.”That’s the message from Australian Men’s Open Touch Football captain, Steve Roberts, in the NRL Touch Football ‘Play our Game’ television commercial, which will be broadcast nationally on Channel Nine and Fox Sports from Sunday, 10 August 2014 and over the coming months. The theme of the 30-second commercial is ‘belief’ with Roberts relaying at his home Touch Football venue at Canterbury-Bankstown and holding a photo of himself from his junior days: “you don’t just become a great footy player overnight; but the more you play, the more you believe in yourself.” The commercial is the third in the series developed by the NRL and broadcast earlier in the year to boost participation and registrations into Rugby League and Touch Football competitions across the country. The previous ads featured NRL stars Jarryd Hayne and Jared Waerea-Hargraves outlining their motivations and backgrounds as kids joining their mates playing in junior rugby league teams as the start of their careers. The Touch Football execution developed through the alliance with the NRL features a cross-section of participants and according to TFA CEO, Colm Maguire, demonstrate their own belief and the diverse nature of the sport: with girls and boys, women and men and a junior mixed team from Touch Football affiliates including the Manly Sea Eagles, Balmain Tigers, Bankstown Jets and Hills Hornets. “We are very excited by the national release of the Touch Football commercial; shining a light on our sport across the lounge-rooms of Australia and encouraging kids and adults of all ages and sizes to play our great game over Summer in coming months,” he said. “As Steve so clearly states and others illustrate in the ad – all people literally have to do is ‘start’ and they’re away; into a lifetime of team bonding, fun, fitness and sharing great times and stories with teammates and opponents alike on and off the footy field.“We are hoping for this to be our biggest season on record with our new NRL Touch Football product brand, new alignment and approaches with our counterparts at the NRL and improved player experiences out on the park proposed now and into the future.” The commercial will be broadcast from 8 August and will run through September and October to promote recruitment and registrations into local competitions for the upcoming Touch Football summer season.A distinct call-to-action element features at the tail-end of the commercial encouraging prospective players to ‘Play our Game’ and visit the playnrl.com/Touch Football website. It’s as easy as keying in their postcode to locate their nearest competition details and registration and contact information to get involved and start playing. The National Rugby League and Touch Football Australia have launched an historic sporting partnership representing the biggest boost to participation and game development in the history of either sport. The two sports (Touch Football and Rugby League) are working together to create under the NRL banner the largest sporting community in the country (over 1 million participants) which will reflect the wider support that exists for Rugby League and the game’s commitment to ensuring there is a ‘place on the field’ for everyone. The first day of play of National Touch League 2018 and Elite 8 was a beauty. Participants took the revised game touchdown turnaround format in their stride and played some superb touch football. And in the spirit of International Women’s Day, we were celebrating the fact that 58 of the 123 teams were either Women’s or Mixed – with a total of 812 female players.Speaking of awesome women, in the Women’s 27’s, NQ remains undefeated, as do the Cobras in the Women’s 35’s and the Hornets in the Women’s 40’s.Another division we want to give a big shout-out to is the new addition – Men’s 60’s. The Scorpions did particularly well in that division, coming out on top after day one.The Men’s T League has a wealth of strong contenders, with the CQ Bulls, Sunshine Coast, the ACT Raiders and Sharks all undefeated. The Men’s 30’s is another particularly competitive division, with the Sharks, Scorpions and Hornets undefeated on day one.In the Men’s 40’s, the Scorpions came out on top, and in the Men’s 45’s the Cobras and Sunshine Coast didn’t lose a game.In Senior Mixed, Tasmania prevailed, and three teams in the Mixed Opens – the Sharks, Rebels and Cobras – remain undefeated. In Elite 8, Queensland teams are at the top of the Men’s and Women’s ladders by the end of day one: the Women’s Titans and Men’s Cowboys. That’s despite the fact that the star try scorers for the Elite 8 tournament came from other teams – Ashleigh Quinlan for the Rebels (8 touchdowns throughout the day) and Tommy Quinlivan from the Broncos (7 touchdowns). The other top try scorers for the day were Serena Albert, with 8 touchdowns for the Rebels in the Mixed Opens, Braydon Hegarty, with 8 for the CQ Bulls in the Men’s T League… And the player who made the most tries for the day – Troy Nichols, who made 9 for the Sharks in the Men’s 30’s.We’re looking forward to seeing how the action unfolds tomorrow!
